I travel a lot for photography. It is one of the great perks of being a photographer. Getting paid to go to beautiful locations around the world and working with interesting talent or models. The hard part is traveling with a ton of heavy equipment and not getting to stick around these great locations to relax as it seems I always need to be back in NYC for another job. But I am by no means complaining! I love the beach!
For the shot below, myself, my assistant Adam, and the rest of the crew shot long hours in the hot sun.
For this particular shoot, I was hired by the management and production team for singer Kat DeLuna. Kat lives in NYC but is originally from the Dominican Republic so the idea was to shoot her there. In meeting with the producers, I was briefed on what the ideas and mood for the shoot would be and I listened to a couple of Kat’s songs at the studio to get a sense of her vibe. After the meeting, I headed back to my place to put together a professional concept board with visuals, locations and a realistic time line for the shoot. I also came up with new ideas for hair, makeup and styling by working with my long-time friend and fashion stylist Oscar Montes de Oca, who was providing wardrobe for the shoot. Hair was by a terrific stylist called Mann.
A little about Kat. Kat DeLuna is an international singer that recently appeared on the tonight show with Jay Leno. She has many hits and works with notable artists like Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Elephant Man, Lil Kim, Shaggy, and Akon. She has been awarded the Latin Billboard music awards and the TMF Awards, among many others. I found Kat to have a really sweet temperament. She was really great to work with, very professional and a lot of fun. Luckily I do not smoke anymore because she does not like the people around her to be smoking as she is always cautious of her voice. That should tell you something about how disciplined she is with her craft! Kat’s producer, Tyrone, took care of all the logistics – booking the plane tickets, hotel accommodations, transportation, and food during the trip.
Here are some of the shots from the shoot at the beach and by the pool. I have a whole new series of fashion images of Kat in a boat that I will be posting soon. I had such a blast shooting down at the beach and in the pool with Kat. Long hours in the sun, but great breaks in the pool between shooting.
I love Kat’s natural beauty and freckles!
On this setting sun shot below, we only had 10 mins as a rain storm was coming! We ran under a tree minutes after this shot was taken with all of our equipment trying to protect it from getting wet! To get the shot below: I exposed for the sky in the background and then used a mobile light unit with a tiny umbrella to light up Kat (fill light).
Kat rolling around in the sand for me! Reminds me of Madonna in her early years.
